This is an old TinuksTalks video I did on snapchat but I felt it was so relevant I just had to retype it out.
“Endure hardship with us like a good soldier for Christ Jesus” 2 Timothy 2:3
A good soldier is brave, strong and most of all, has victory in wars. We are called to be good soldiers and in order to do this there are certain things we need to understand and there is a special type of reliance we need to have on God that leads us to victory in war. God loves us so much he doesn’t sleep on watching over us. Through revelation of this love and the trust you can put in God, I hope you change your relationship with God and rely on him to be your abundant supply of strength and guidance. In order to be a soldier, you need to take a few steps.
- Know you are a soldier
I know a lot of people think the enemy in life is their family, global warming or Donald Trump but Ephesians 6 says that “we struggle not against flesh and blood but against rulers , against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil”. I don’t know about you but that to me does not sound like a walk in the park, which is why God made us soldiers as Christians. A lot of times people fail not because God hasn’t made them soldiers but because they haven’t acknowledged that they are soldiers. do you know who you are? Soldiers are not men who fight alone but with togetherness. In 2 Kings 6:16 Elisha is a prophet who told the King of Israel that the king of Aram was going to attack his camp (lets just say he stimulated beef between himself and the king of Aram). What did the king of Aram do? he sent soldiers to surround the city of Dothan where Elisha was with his servant. The servant saw the army and was shook but Elisha said something powerful
“Dont be afraid. Those who are with us are more than those who are with them”
I’m sure the servant was questioning Elisha’s sight but when Elisha prayed, the servants eyes opened and he saw hills filled with chariots of fire. Elisha knew that he had the army of God on his side so his confidence was deeply planted in God. As a child of God you have to understand that you are not alone! When Joshua was giving his farewell speech to his soldiers he said
“one of you routs a thousand because the Lord your God fights for you”.
This just goes to show that when you are led by God and protected by his army, you cannot be shaken. What we forget to do is allow God to lead the army. Human beings have a horrible habit of trying to control everything and guide ourselves when we don’t even know where we are going. On so many occasions in the bible, the statements ‘be still’ or ‘fear not’ are used because people always forget to acknowledge God going before them. When the Israelites were leaving Egypt, God made a cloud to guide them through the desert. A cloud was just casually leading the way which is perfectly normal right? After this extraordinary experience they were going to cross the Red Sea and were immediately scared (Exodus 13&14). Before we accuse the Israelite’s of being blind, let’s just think of how often we do this same thing every time we experience God and go back to fear. let be soldiers that are established on Christ eternal rock because we know that in God, we will not be shaken (Psalm 62:6-8)
2.Act like a soldier
Now that you know you are a soldier, let’s learn a bit more about acting like one. Going back to Exodus 14 where the people were afraid, Moses said
“Do not be afraid, stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you” v13.
Stand firm can be said to coincides with ‘be still’. A soldier who knows who he/she is will be firm not because of their own strength but in the strength that comes from God who is always victorious. Do you understand that God does not lose battles? That is why David could put his trust in God as said in Psalm 62 and other psalms. Those who put their hope and strength in God will be able to stand firm because they have made the Lord their “fortress” and in turn they can never be shaken.
Another thing soldiers do is ‘be still’ and this is not only to do with fearlessness but waiting for God’s instruction. We are not the commanders of this army called life. God is the one that says ‘run’, ‘shoot’ and what not. In order to succeed we have to be careful to listen to God which is why in Joshua 23:11 right after Joshua tells the soldiers God’s army is fighting for them he says
“be careful to love the Lord”.
To love God is to be obedient for if we love God we would obey him (John 14:15). Therefore, you are only insured a place in the army if you are living in a way that is obedient to Christ because how can God guide you when you’re walking on a different path from him?
3.Use your Armour
This is where the believers have to pay close attention. God is not a God of confusion so we don’t get thrown on the battle field without any armour. We have been given spiritual armour that for some reason we just forget to use when times get tough.
“13 therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. 14 Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. 15 For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared.[e] 16 In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil.[f] 17 Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” Ephesians 6:13-17
I know what you’re thinking; there are too many flames in this scripture. We are asked to put on this armour because we forget to on some occasions. When fighting a battle the best thing we can do is rely on the Holy Spirit and not on our own ability but like David did to defeat Goliath was to come against every battle in the name of the Lord (1 Samuel 17:45). God has given us all we need to overcome but I am only going to focus on one bit of the armour and that is the shield.
“The Lord is a sun and shield” Psalm 84: 11
When my friend and I went paintballing it was really fun but painful. In the second to the last round where there were just drums to hide behind, we ran out of paint-ball bullets. Our last resort was to find one of the big shields and sit behind it until the shooters had run out of bullets. We sat behind this long shield that protected us from paint balls and it reminded me of our relationship with God. Sometimes life gets overwhelming and we can fight as much as we could so what can we do? Thanks to God we can hide behind our eternal shield. No matter how capable we thing we our, the Lord is our shield and in Ephesians 6 we are asked to use our shield of faith. Psalm 84 talks about those who trust in God before talking about God being a shield.
“Blessed are those whose strength is in you,
who have set their hearts on pilgrimage.
they pass through the Valley of Baca,
they make it a place of the springs;
the autumn rain covers it with pools”
This scripture is so powerful. The valley of Baca is also known as the valley of weeping. Imagine you’re in trenches and there is famine but you need to get to the other side and the only way is through this dark, dry valley of death. You make up your mind to keep moving and just because you put your trust in God and the Holy Spirit to lead you, when you walk through this trying time of life, rain begins to pour and flowers begin to grow. I don’t know if you see the image I see but what the scripture is saying that just because you trust God, you can bring supernatural change to your situation and get through the trenches and victoriously power through. When God with his overwhelmingly powerful and supernatural presence that heals, binds and releases becomes your shield, defence and source, you can walk into darkness and be a source of light. Use your shield! How? God has given you himself in the form of the Word of God ( that is why the word is living and active). Hide behind your shield and use is Word and Spirit to guide you through whatever circumstance you’re in.
Understand that when you are a Christian walking in obedience to Christ and living by the Spirit, you are enabled to do a lot of things you wouldn’t normally be able to. God has given you all you need to be a victorious soldier. Psalm 28 says that we can trust the Lord to be our helper. More importantly we can trust him to be a good father; one who protects his children, who sometimes lets them experience the hardship of the battlefield because he knows that suffering builds character (Romans 5:3). At the end of the day it is all to show how good God is, that regardless of our circumstances and battles, his presence always dominates and conquers. How amazing is it that we can trust God so much because he is love and love never fails.
If you want you can say a prayer based on what you’ve read. Pray to have confidence in God. Pray that your eyes open to see his army guarding you. Ask God to reveal himself to you. Ask to be fortified with the armour. Ask and you shall be given. Most of all, thank God for revelations and his trustworthy nature. If you have any questions feel free to email or comment. Thanks for reading and I hope this blessed you.
